PhD Fellowships in Machine Learning at Ghent University’s KERMIT Research Unit

Date:

Overview

Ghent University is excited to announce the availability of three fully-funded PhD fellowships within the KERMIT research unit, which focuses on machine learning. This initiative is part of a significant investment by the Flemish government aimed at advancing artificial intelligence research. The positions are designed to attract talented candidates who are eager to contribute to innovative projects in this dynamic field.

Background & Relevance

The KERMIT research unit, which stands for Knowledge Extraction and Representation Management by means of Intelligent Techniques, is an interdisciplinary team comprising mathematicians, engineers, and computer scientists. The unit emphasizes the mathematical and computational aspects of relational structures as knowledge instruments, particularly in fuzzy set theory and machine learning. KERMIT plays a crucial role in applying intelligent techniques across various domains, including biological sciences, hydrology, ecology, and bioinformatics, making it a vital contributor to the AI/ML community.

Key Details

  • Positions Available: 3 PhD fellowships
  • Location: Ghent University, Belgium
  • Research Topics:
  • Extreme classification
  • Pairwise learning
  • Metric learning
  • Application Deadline: 30 September
  • Start Date: As soon as possible
  • Contact for Applications: Ruth Van Den Driessche (ruth.vandendriessche@ugent.be)

Eligibility & Participation

The PhD positions are open to candidates with a strong background in relevant fields. Ideal applicants should possess an MSc degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, or a related discipline. Candidates from outside Belgium are encouraged to apply. A passion for machine learning research, both theoretical and applied, is essential, along with proficiency in at least one programming language such as Matlab, R, Python, Julia, or Java. Fluency in English is required, while knowledge of Dutch is considered an asset but not mandatory.

Submission or Application Guidelines

To apply for one or more of the PhD positions, candidates should prepare the following materials:
– A detailed CV
– A motivation letter
– A copy of their MSc thesis and/or any relevant publications

These documents should be sent via email to Ruth Van Den Driessche. Applicants are encouraged to specify which of the three positions they are applying for in their email. Additionally, candidates may reach out to the co-supervisors for further information regarding the projects.

Additional Context / Real-World Relevance

The research conducted at KERMIT is not only academically significant but also has practical implications across various sectors. By focusing on advanced machine learning techniques such as extreme classification, pairwise learning, and metric learning, the unit aims to address complex challenges in real-world applications. This research is particularly relevant in areas requiring sophisticated data analysis and decision-making processes, thus contributing to the broader AI landscape.

Conclusion

This is an excellent opportunity for motivated individuals to engage in cutting-edge research at Ghent University. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply promptly and explore the potential of their contributions to the field of machine learning. This initiative not only supports academic growth but also enhances the application of AI in diverse domains.
