Call for Papers: LoResMT 2026 Workshop on Low-Resource Machine Translation

Date:

Overview

The Ninth Workshop on Technologies for Machine Translation of Low-Resource Languages (LoResMT 2026) is set to take place at EACL 2026 in Rabat, Morocco. This workshop aims to foster discussions among researchers focused on machine translation (MT) systems and methods for low-resource and under-represented languages. Given the increasing importance of inclusivity in language technology, this workshop serves as a vital platform for sharing insights and advancements in the field.

Background & Relevance

Low-resource languages often face significant challenges in natural language processing (NLP) and machine translation due to a lack of available data and resources. The LoResMT workshop builds on the success of previous workshops and aims to address these challenges by providing a forum for researchers to present their work, share experiences, and discuss future directions in low-resource MT. The significance of this workshop lies in its potential to enhance the quality and accessibility of MT for languages that are often overlooked in mainstream research.

Key Details

  • Workshop Dates: To be determined during EACL 2026 (March 24-29, 2026)
  • Location: Rabat, Morocco
  • Submission Deadline: December 19, 2025 (Anywhere on Earth)

  • EACL 2026 Main Conference: March 24-29, 2026

Eligibility & Participation

The workshop invites submissions from researchers, practitioners, and developers working on machine translation for low-resource languages. It targets individuals and teams engaged in developing tools, systems, and methodologies that enhance the translation capabilities for these languages. Participants are encouraged to share their findings and contribute to the collective knowledge in this vital area of research.

Submission or Application Guidelines

Submissions are divided into two categories: (1) research, review, and position papers, and (2) system demonstration papers. The following guidelines apply:
Research Papers: 4 to 8 pages, excluding references.
System Demonstration Papers: Up to 4 pages.
– All submissions must adhere to the official ACL style templates available on Overleaf.
– Papers must be anonymized and submitted through the provided submission system.
– Accepted papers will be published in the EACL 2026 proceedings and must be presented in person at the conference.
– Authors are encouraged to cite relevant papers in any language, providing both original and English translations.

More Information

The workshop will also feature a machine translation competition focusing on several low-resource Turkic languages, including Chuvash, Bashkir, Tatar, and Kazakh. Participants will evaluate their models on specified language pairs, and while training data will not be provided, participants can utilize any data they find useful. This competition aims to stimulate research and innovation in low-resource MT.

Conclusion

The LoResMT 2026 workshop presents an excellent opportunity for researchers to contribute to the growing field of low-resource machine translation. Interested parties are encouraged to prepare their submissions and engage with the community to advance the state of the art in this critical area of NLP.
